To make sure we Sweep Six seats in California to take back the House, we know what counts the most: Talking directly with voters.
Yes, face-to-face conversations take time and effort, but they work. That’s why our California Grassroots Alliance calendar is chock-full of opportunities to go to a district and connect with people at their front door. Our Alliance colleague (and Firebreak video editor) Michael Chaskes tells us about his experience canvassing in CA-27.
“I've been canvassing in California's 27th district since 2017, most recently for outstanding Democratic candidate George Whitesides for Congress.
“Canvassing is empowering for voters -- we provide them with critical information about the race, and let them know that their individual vote matters. But it's also empowering for us, the canvassers. In scary times such as these, nothing is a better balm for fear, stress, and worry than action.
“We make personal connections with voters at the door, and it's both exhilarating AND effective. I've had a young woman just back home from major surgery take information so she could volunteer too. I've spoken to a man with a felony on his record and let him know that he COULD still vote and that his voice was important. And I've talked to people who don't typically vote, described issues that directly affect them and their families, and gotten their commitment to vote for George. Voters in this district, especially in the Antelope Valley, are often somewhat disconnected from politics, and a few short minutes of conversation can make all the difference.
“The wins we have at voters' doors may feel small, but they add up quickly, and they can make the difference between a successful race and a losing one. And given the stakes of this election, that's not small potatoes. Canvassing is the literal embodiment of what we all do as activists for life: we put one foot in front of the other, and we just keep going.”
